Selecting the right size bed & mattress

Our article will help you find and choose the perfect mattress size for you and your bedroom, whether you are looking to upgrade your mattress or even to find a bed to fit that small box room.

We will explain all about mattress sizes that will help you choose a new mattress with ease.

Finding the right sized mattress can be confusing, most people don’t check in advance what bed will fit and end up with a bed that is too small or won’t even fit up the stairs. This is where our mattress size guide can help.

If you’re asking yourself “what size is a mattress?” then this is the blog for you.

There are so many things to think about when you’re buying a bed or mattress. If you’re buying a bed for two adults then there are a number of things that you need to consider.

The first thing you need to think about is the width of the bed. The majority of couples still sleep in a standard size double bed which is only 4ft 6” wide. This provides each person with as little as 2ft 3” of space each which is less than you would give a baby in a cot.

In a standard size double bed, you are more likely to disturb your partner whenever you change position or move, resulting in a bad night’s sleep. Although, some couples do choose to sleep close to each other, saying that it improves intimacy compared to sleeping in a larger bed where you will have much more space and have to search for you partner.

Although a standard size double bed fits two people, this size would be more suitable for single occupancy. So, with partner movement a major cause of a bad night’s sleep, buying a bigger bed should result in a much better night’s sleep.

When looking for a new bed, for size try lying next to your partner on your backs and put your hands behind your head with your elbows sticking out. If your elbows don’t touch then you will have enough space to sleep comfortably.

The second thing you need to think about when buying a bed is the length. It is advisable to buy a bed that is about 10cm longer than the tallest person. The last thing you need is for your feet to be hanging over the end of the mattress.

The length of a standard UK double bed is 6ft 3”, so anyone taller than 5ft 11” should think about getting one that is 6ft 6” (King Size) in length. A UK king size mattress measures 6ft 6” in length, as does a Super King size, so both of these options would be better suited.

Below is a table of mattress sizes. This will give you a better idea on mattress sizes.

What is the most popular Mattress size?

According to studies the most popular UK mattress size is now a King size, the record was previously held by the double bed. You won’t want to be left behind. Many people are looking for a better night sleep, which is why the king-size beds are becoming very popular. We all deserve the best night sleep, so why settle for second rate when it comes to your mattresses?

Bed frame size Vs Mattress size

When choosing a new mattress, you need to think about the mattress base that it will sit on. Especially, if it will fit into both your bedroom and also up the stairs!

The mattress size you buy, should always correspond to the bed size you are also buying.

For example, if you buy a king-size bed then you will need to buy a king-size mattress to go with it. Bear in mind, each bed frame type may be slightly larger than the actual mattress depending on the design/style, which you need to take into consideration.

For instance, A metal bed frames maybe up to 2cm wider to accommodate the mattress in the lip. Also, wooden bed frames can be couple of centimetres larger than your mattress around each side again sitting within the frame.
